Song of the Sea by Jade Varden

Song of the Sea  : ★★★★☆ (3.8)

“It’s a liquid land filled with secrets and mysteries, and I wanted to discover them all.”

– Jade Varden, Song of the Sea

Brenna, a fifteen years old girl finds a fairly odd artifact in her attic and decided to use it for her school project. Unusual? Yes, but not useless. She will discover through that action how her world will be changed forever and that her family’s history laid beyond the surface of the Earth. Across the Atlantic Ocean, we will discover another universe with mermaids, selkies and mermen. Honestly, I didn’t know the existence of selkies before reading this. I had to google some pictures and damn, what a fascinating creature it is !

“Selkies look like seals but they can shed their skins if they want and walk around on the beach”

– JADE VARDEN, SONG OF THE SEA

I was genuinely pleased with the book, a quick read for all fantasy fans. Love the plot twist near the end, I will always applaud books who challenge my ending’s prediction. Adding to that, Jade Varden’s imaginative and creative description of the underwater living world is to be praised, especially for her unique War and Battle in the ocean approach opposing most of the fairytale stories about mermaids and their lands .

“IT WAS SUCH A DEEP SADNESS IT CHILLED mY HEART AND WRAPPED ICY FINGERS AROUND MY SOUL.”

– JADE VARDEN, SONG OF THE SEA

The only reason why it didn’t get a 5 stars is because there are some facts in the book that I couldn’t comprehend, that I find unrealistic and illogical. Brenna is supposed to be a fifteen years old girl but she ends up doing a lot of things that requires: 1. Being legal to do so. 2. Having the competencies to travel across the ocean alone without any help. Maybe, what lacks is some background descriptions of the character for us to really understand how she got there.  Not to mention that the very ending kind of felt rushed, which was a little disappointing for me.
