Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

MY RATING : ★★★★★

“Virtual sex, no matter how realistic, was really nothing but glorified, computer-assisted masturbation.”
― Ernest Cline

It’s 2044, the Earth is slowly collapsing, some humans are living in awful conditions while other enjoy fancy lifestyle as the gap between social classes keeps ripping off. But one thing everyone has in common : at the end of the day, everyone is logged in and ready to enter the OASIS

The OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) is a MASSIVELY multiplayer virtual reality game. James Halliday is his creator and unfortunately, the billionnaire is dying. Leaving behind his fortune to ONE player who will have the chance to receive everything he owns. All of his heritage.

xssxHowever, to receive the Grand Prize the winner has to find 3 keys and unlock their gates and grab the Easter Egg. Those clues are spread throughout OASIS.

This is the story of the winner’s journey.

OKAY FIRST, HOW COOL DOES THAT SOUND?! I was totally hooked by the idea of game in a game #inception.

SECOND, the OASIS universe was WONDERFULLY done. You can get a job, go to school, buy stuff, create your own appartment, having friends, in that universe. You can also jump between different world and planets depending on your level. Some sectors allow magic and technology/weapons while others do not.

THE CHARACTERS are so unique ! Because it’s an online world, you can pratically be anyone you want to be. From your deepest desire to your wildest fantasy. There’s also that doubt and suspicion clouding the air. Who are they exactly? How do they look like? And AHMYGOD. The biggest plot twist in the book is in the character’s real identity hahaha 😀

THE TWISTS AND TURNS never fail me. AND It’s action packed ! AMEN.

A LITTLE WARNING: There will be A LOT of videogames, movies, books references. It is a real tribute to geeks all over the world haha. Don’t be intimidated by that aspect. You can always overlook them and simply enjoy the storyline!

Finally, as I always love in a book, is to learn new things and also reflect on the impacts of the future technology. This book offered a lot of downsides and upsides of a virtual reality game accessible to everyone. The lesson from this book is : we cannot stop the technology to outgrow (because there will be obviously science breakthrough faster and faster) but we can control ourselves and not be the slaves of those tools.

P.S : A MOVIE IS COMING OUT IN 2018 DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG 😀

I’ve been seeing this book for quite some time and it’s only here where I got to know its story. The premise looks promising, though I already have my right doses of people inside virtual reality from anime =p Piqued how this one turns out .

Sword Art Online comes to mind. There’s also the Hack series. Both are about people trapped in a game.

If you want something fun and family-oriented, there’s Summer Wars. It’s about the internet being controlled by a virus. It nicely compares simple and traditional family life to the complications of technology in a really enjoying way

    Yaaasss!

I’m so glad you loved this book as much as I did.
I know a lot about geek culture, but not enough clearly! There were so many things I didn’t know that Ernest Cline was referencing. But I read the entire book with Google open on my phone, so I could always research a vague reference. This helped immensely in my enjoyment of the story. It’s not necessary, but so worth it.

Great review and graphics! You’re always so clever with your reviews, Trang.

Great review! I like your screen grabs – gives a good visual of how the books feels. I like your last point about not being able to stop technology but not letting the technology control us. Really good book!
