The Midnight Star ( The Young Elites #3) by Marie Lu

“There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.”

– Marie Lu

capture-decran-2017-02-26-a-14-32-12With the last book of the trilogy read, I can confirm that this one is my favourite trilogies ever. It beats out Divergent and Hunger Games easily. Maybe because I always loved Fantasy more than Dystopian trilogies. The Grisha Trilogy was amazing but I found flaws in the 1st book. The Young Elites hasn’t.

If you haven’t read my reviews for the other two books of this trilogy you can find them here : The Young Elites (#1) / The Rose Society (#2)

Adelina is now Queen. After the incident with Enzo in the Rose Society, she has set the world upside down with a dark and poisonous vibe. An abnormal feeling that starts to pollute the water and the earth. The doors of the mortal and the immortal are now open and some strange things are going on. Adelina denies them and continues to rule as she thinks is the ”best” for the marked people, making the unmarked suffered like she has.

Seeing all the gang together make me nostalgic and I’m glad Marie Lu had reunited them for one last journey together. They have to set aside their past and differences for the greater good. I compared The Young Elites novel to X-Men, well this one you can say it’s all mutants together fighting. You get the picture.

Adelina’s character development is a tour de force here. I guess it’s the main reason why this trilogy is my favourite fantasy trilogy too. The depth of her character is beyond anything I’ve read in other books. How she deals with her good and evil side is relatable because nothing is really black and white. Cruel people don’t know what they’re doing is cruel. Everything is in the perception. Villains think what they are doing is actually good and helping a cause. A recurrent theme in this one.

The worldbuilding is still perfect. In the Middle Age, Italy type of world. Since Adelina is starting to conquer a lot of territories, we get to discover the connections between the places and all the tricks in every town.

The use of mythology in this finale is  A TOTAL SURPRISE THAT MARIE LU DID ❤  I’ve always loved mythologies in novels but she’s inserting this concept perfectly in the end of the book. I don’t want to spoil anything here, but please read it and if you know what I’m talking about feel free to share your thoughts with me. BECAUSE HOW AMAZING WAS THAT?

capture-decran-2017-02-26-a-14-32-23I LOVED.. THE CONCLUSION

The final scene has made me cry so badly. That’s how good it was. She ended the trilogies with the same force she has introduced us to this series. Thank you for this reading experience ❤

  1. Ahh yes I *loved* the setting and the mythology (agree it was so darned clever- I was really impressed!) and the ending was perfect- for me it was the only way it could have ended, but like you said it was really powerful. I have to say I absolutely adored this trilogy and I’m so glad you liked it too!! Great review!!

      1. YES!! Me too- it was absolutely perfect- I was so impressed that she didn’t just shove an “they all lived happily ever after” ending on the end- that would have been so out of place- and what she did instead was so beautiful and profound and, yes, classy!!

    1. I got to start that series man 😭! This one doesn’t havr mythology as much. In fact, it’s only in the 3rd book that has it. But definitely worth the shot if you like a good fantasy vibe! – Trang

  5. I absolutely adored this series…until I read this finale. It just felt extremely rushed and messy to me, leaving more questions than it answered. I’m really glad that you enjoyed it though! I think maybe my expectations were just too high?
