Caraval by Stephanie Garber

MY RATING:

A lot of hype surrounded this book so I went in with a lot of expectations. Unfortunately it didn’t meet mine. I ended up giving it 3 stars, it was enjoyable but I had some problems with it. For the following reasons:

  • The main character was annoying since the beginning and it didn’t help much when she miraculously has all the answers to her problems within seconds. You have to find something? Adds a character who shows you the way!
  • The writing is way too weird. I think this is something everyone has noticed. Don’t get me wrong I find it very cool that the author wanted to incorporate some associations between emotions and tastes, smells. But, the execution just seems odd to read. It impacts the reading experience for most of the time.
  • Surprisingly, there were some nice plot twists here and there! I like how the author went beyond our comfort zone and add some spice on the plot. This fact makes me appreciate the book a little more.
  • The magical aspect and concept were excellent. I think a lot could be done if you start with that foundation. I’d love to see the Caraval Games but writing under a darker theme and atmosphere. The author barely touches the essence of the magic. You may think oh that’s because it’s the 1st book in a series. Even an introduction to the world building should include some basic knowledge of how the magic works.
  • Finally, that ending was very disappointing. I’m sorry but I’m so done with endings that feel like it was all a dream and nothing existed. Everything was a lie. That’s too easy, man.
  • Oh and.. It’s nothing like The Night Circus.

I would recommend this book for people who love :

Magical games and great plot twist. However, I must warn you that the vibe feels kind of childish due to the writing.

I’d like to thank Raincoast for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

If you’re interested in the book anyway, we still have a very Caravally Giveaway going on 😀

I agree so much! The author could have done so much more with the concept but the main character was just annoying and the ending UGH… don’t even get me started on how disappointed I was. Awesome review!

I think I gave this 3 stars as well. It was nowhere near as good as I was expecting. I was mostly bored, I didn’t think the story was that exciting, honestly.

I have been hearing a lot of mixed reviews and the main one is it is not like night circus…..which I haven’t read yet. I think if I’m in the mood for something magical I think I would try night circus first. Great review by the way!!

    First, I love your pics!!!
Now on to the book, I was never attracted by this title because I’m not much of a fan of circus and stuff, and there was definitely too much hype around it! It’s so easy to bring the solution with know-it-all characters, blah! Great review!

I was pretty exited about this book coming out, as it was compared to The Night Circus – which is one of my all time favourite books. But seeing all the reviews I have lost all interest in it if I’m being honest. It just doesn’t seem like a book that I would enjoy and I’m very unsure if I will be picking it up. Great review!! 😀 Also, those pictures are sooo beautiful! ❤

Well, good thing I just bought The Night Circus and haven’t read Caraval yet…most of the people I have talked to loved The Night Circus so I am looking forward to reading it!

I’m sorry to hear that book wasn’t the best book. I read some mixed reviews about it all as well, but I’m still curious about this synopsis 🙂 Lovely review!

Uh oh… That definitely doesn’t sound promising for my own future experience with Caraval! Annoying character, weird writing, disappointed ending… I guess I’ll have to keep my expectations low when I finally pick up my copy. Great review!

Wow those pictures, it’s great to see such green in the city! Even when it’s not my genre, I know about this book, which is saying something :-). I’ve heard the title many many times and I thought everybody liked this one really.. so sorry to hear it didn’t really work its magic for you. I find it sometimes difficult to pinpoint what didn’t really work for me so thumbs up for your very nice and clear review!

Thank you for more pics ❤

I agree with this review 110%. I ultimately slapped 3 stars on this one as well but struggled with the exact same elements you did. I could not connect with and often disliked the MC. I thought that the author's attempts to use our senses (taste, smell, etc) in connection with every description became very tiresome and too "fluffy". The ending was so predictably annoying. But it was a fast read with that was not without some entertainment. Very fair review 🙂
