The Diviners by Libba Bray

“Naughty John, Naughty John, does his work with his apron on. Cuts your throat and takes your bones, sells ’em off for a coupla stones.”
― Libba BrayThe Diviners

Do you have a book that you’ve been postponing its reviews because you feel like you just CAN’T DO IT JUSTICE? Yupp that’s me for everybook. LOL jk mostly this one. I’ve read this a while ago and never had the strength to put out its review. Today’s the day ! No more procrastinating ! I’ll try my best to describe my experience but YOU SHOULD ALL READ IT 😀

Why this book was 5 stars

  • 1920s setting. Something about that period really excites me! I think it’s the dress-code in that time mixing with The Great Gatsby vibe. But also a very important period of prohibition, from the liquors to organized crimes. People are enjoying life but also start to discover the little forbidden pleasures of life.

  • The magical surrealism. Early in the novel, we get to see a glimpse of the supernatural and some Diviners’ powers. But as you read the book, you discover that it’s not a simple magic system. Some people got their powers reveal in dreams, others in some weird odd situations or simply genetic.

  • The murders and thrillers vibe. When I first heard about this series, I honestly didn’t know it was going to be THIS DARK? Oh hell, I didn’t even know there was going to be a mystery murder kind of storyline. The murders are pretty raw and bloody from time to time.

  • The characters are entertaining and endearing. I really liked Evie as the main character. She’s reckless, witty smart but can also be very stubborn. I can see myself in her hahah. Will, her uncle, owns a very odd museum about supernatural stuff. He’s passionate about history, but can also be protective, patient and very analytic. We meet along the journey, Sam, a professional young thief who is hired by her Uncle to help with the museum and Jericho, a fellow student of Will, who tried to hide a dark secret from his past.

Have you read this book? Do you intend to read it ?

I immediately jumped to the sequel after finishing this one. It’s so worth it, even better than the first one! 😀

I’m so glad you enjoyed this book so much, Trang, you make it sound so appealing- and I’m not a fan of books with raw and bloody murders, but the characters and universe overall sounds so interesting 😀

  2. Omg I love The Diviners so much!!! It’s a series that does not get the love it deserves at all. I just read the third book and I can assure you that shit gets even DARKER. I love how she makes the politics of the 1920s feel so relevant to now, especially in the third book as you’ll see.

Libba Bray is one of my all-time YA favourites. I’ve been reading her since I was an actual teen and I autobuy everything she puts out.

Don’t you just love when a book is that good?

It happening during the 20’s makes it pretty much a no-go for me though, as I don’t like the whole flapper/prohibition/gangster thing in general.

Hoping the sequel is as good for you…

  8. I’ve certainly had books I put off reviewing because of not knowing how to do them justice 🙂

I’ve read this one and the next two books in the series. I enjoyed them, but I think you enjoyed this one more than I did 🙂

  10. Yayy, I’m so glad this was a 5 star read for you Trang! I really enjoyed this one too BUT I read it SO LONG AGO that I honestly forgot everything (lol). Thus, I haven’t been keeping up with the series. Plus,e each book is SO HUGE! Nevertheless, your review reminded me that I really need to get back in the game on this one!

  11. Confession: I really didn’t enjoy this book. My biggest challenge was that Bray’s introduction didn’t feel like an unassociated Prologue. Instead, the chapters which follow felt like an interlude to get back to Naughty John. I was bored with the actual story because the setup was so poorly done, in my opinion. I had such high hopes. 😦

  12. I’m so glad this was good- I’m really curious about it (especially cos I love the 20s as a setting) And the magical realism combined with the thriller vibe sounds to die for! 😀 😉 Awesome review!
