PERSONAL LIVES

Trang

October has been a big month for me! Starting with my birthday on October 14 😀 I had the chance to spend it with my family and I was so happy. Nothing is more important than some family time. It was also the month that I learned I got an interview for Harvard Med! Super excited about it 🙂 For Halloween, I dressed up as Wonder Woman Bombshells, to see the costume click here. As for my mom, she’s doing better. We are still waiting for the biopsy to come back and tell us if she needs chemo or not.  I want to thank you all for being there with me all along and your support means everything to me ❤ I tried to get back on blog hopping as much as I can but there are so many blogs out there. If I miss out some of your posts, don’t take it personal!

Two months into my PhD degree, I can safely say that I’ve been enjoying this new chapter of my life without finding myself trudging through mud (or should I actually be saying snow since we already saw our first snowflakes this month!).

I think a lot of it really comes down to how much you know yourself and how well you manage time. With unpredictable inconveniences always prowling in your shadow, you just have to understand that everything you think you’ve set in stone is actually always movable and needs to constantly adapt to your situation.

Honestly, with work, school and my personal life, I’ve quickly learned that prioritizing is key to a healthy stress-free lifestyle. I mean, just reading, reviewing and interacting with you guys has become such a precious thing to me that ignoring it just feels like killing a part of myself. I’m just glad I can do what I do, and that there are folks out there who take the time to show their support. Stay awesome, guys!

Yours truly,

Lashaan & Trang

  • Ooooh there’s so much good stuff in this post to respond to:
    – YESSSSSS to Circe and Big Hero 6!
    – The Poppy War is on my TBR for this month and I am very excited for it. I held back from buying it when it was first released but caved last week and finally bought a copy
    – Happy belated birthday Trang and I’m really happy for you and your mum ❤ Also FUCKING CONGRATS on your Harvard Med interview. That is absolutely incredible and you should feel so proud of yourself.
    – I'm glad you're enjoying your PhD so far, Lashaan. I've just started doing a masters in research (basically a pre-PhD course where we're designing our research proposals and applying for PhD funding) and it has felt like the perfect thing to be doing right now? It's also been nice to have blogging as a space to come back to and connect with friends to balance out all of the research!

I wish you both the best Novembers!

    • Sort of super ashamed about not having seen Big Hero 6 earlier hahaha Did it now in anticipation of Kingdom Hearts 3 actually, if you know what I’m talking about! 😛

I saw a picture of your haul containing Poppy War too hahah Hope you’ll enjoy it, cause I too bailed on it on release and only just got around to trying it out after so many raving reviews!

I had just completed my masters over the summer in fact! If your gravatar profile is up to date, I assume you’re in anthropology? My field of study is actually criminology hahah and man, I know exactly what you’re dealing with. Had to apply for some funding lately too. They sure aren’t the most fun thing to be doing huh. 😀 And yes! Being able to crawl back to this blog after all the research stuff is always such a relief.

Happy reading and hope the best of Novembers to you too! 🙂

  • Trang:
Looking good in that WW cosplay uniform. And also, if it isn’t too personal, please do keep us updated on your mom. We would like to share your burden.

    Lashaan-san:
Wax on, wax off. Mr Miyagi should have gone into the hair removal business…
And man, you’ve been tearing through the Graphic novels. Do you find them easier to digest with being so busy?

    • Hahah good stuff! And absolutely. A lot easier to digest, and yet still lots to take away from the experience/each story. Although I’ve been through some really… crap ones too lately. As you probably know, I have a deep love for them even if many don’t read them as much as I do. I also don’t have an insane reading speed to compete with all the other bookworms who tear through a whole novel in a day while going to work and adulting… Being able to read graphic novels and a novel per week just makes me feel competent among these bookworms too. 😛 Okay, that last part is more of a joke since I don’t really care if I can or can’t read as many novels as others. We do what we love, right? 😀

      • Comparing ones self to others is a real trap, that is for sure. Whether it is books read, or “likes” on a post, or followers, the moment we start comparing to someone else, our contentedness is gone. It is such a conscious choice to be content with what we have 🙂

    • Thank you so much Bookstooge! 😀 I will update you as much as possible on my Mom’s condition since she’s a big part of my life. Thank you I put a lot of time into that costume and first time doing it from scratch too hehe 🙂

  • Congratulations on the Harvard Medical interview. Good luck. This post was great thank you for the list. Although, I’m not much into Greek mythology, so Circe was a disappointment.

  • Trang I’m very glad to hear that your mother is doing better 😊 That is such good news! And Lashaan I’m glad to hear that things in your life are going well too, especially with your PhD. It’s been a great month of reviews and as always I have been highly enjoying reading them all! Looking forward to this month, and all the things you will both be reading. You can be sure I will be there again! 😊😊

    • Man, I have to give you mad respect for always being there. I mean, to actually read all the words I vomit? It is a privilege to have such support and to actually hear your interest in all of it, whether you plan to read it or not. Thanks man, and I too look forward to all the board game, book, anime and movies reviews you’ve got for us. Keep ’em coming, sir! 🙂

  • Lovely wrap-up! ❤
Trang: I can't wait to watch both THUG and A Star Is Born, both seem amazing – unfortunately I have to wait for next year for THUG to be released in my country, it's so frustrating.
I'm excited to hear your thoughts on Odd One Out, that book had some pretty mixed reviews out there and I'm curious to hear what you thinkof it 🙂
ALSO, Happy belated birthday, your birthday is one day before mine, yay! I'm glad you had a good one 🙂 I'm happy to hear about your mom, too and I'll keep my fingers crossed. Sending you all the love and positive vibes ❤
Lashaan: BIG HERO 6! I love that movie and Baymax so, very much as well 😀
I'm glad to hear you found your right rhythm and prioritizing what matters to you, too, that's so important 😀
I hope you'll both have a lovely November! xx

Lashaan, I’m happy you’re enjoying your phd and I’m sure you’ll like every step of it 😄 also, your time-management skills never fail to amaze me 😂 they’ll surely be useful for the next years 😉 you have my full support on that 😝

  • I have so far failed to see either A Star is Born or The Hate U Give and I am so mad at myself. The last couple weekends have been sunny here in the UK and seeing as it is now November (and every sunny day feels like it may well be the last until, like.. March) I feel like I HAVE to be outside. Also, broke.

I don’t think I’ve ever caught one of your wrap ups before so I had no idea how busy both of your lives are! I am now even more impressed by the amount of reading you do.

Trang – Your mother is in my thoughts. I’m hoping for the best for all of you. It must be a really stressful time! My brother recently went through a health scare (still in progress but looking like a positive outcome, thankfully) and it is awful, so I can relate. I hope you’re all able to find little things to de-stress.
Congrats on your interview! I’m sure you’ll be fantastic.

Lashaan – I did not realise you were doing a pHD! What are you studying? Do you have to teach? That always seems terrifying.
I think every time we go through a life change it takes time to find the balance again of fitting in everything we need to do with those things that we love to do. The biggest thing, I’ve found, is to just be patient with yourself because that balance does tend to reassert itself in the end.

    Happy November! xx

    • Hahaha! I’ve done all my studies in criminology! 😀 I don’t need to teach, but having completed my masters, I can decide to teach if I want to. 😀 But since I want to focus on my thesis during my first years, I won’t teach full-time for now. 😀 I do give conferences though, and they are fun here and then! 😛

Exactly! Patience is definitely key, and such a hard thing for many to apply in their own lives. Happy November to you too, Lydia! 😀

  • It sounds like you’ve both had a pretty good October so finger’s crossed the rest of 2018 will be even more amazing for you both. 🙂 ❤
Congrats on the interview Trang, that's absolutely incredible and I'm really wishing you all the best! Also I absolutely loved Circe, it's just an incredibly beautiful story and Madeline Miller is now an automatic add to my TBR list. I've heard mixed reviews about Grim Lovelies so I'll be giving that one a miss I think. 😀
Lashaan I'll be looking forwards to seeing what you think of The Poppy War, I wouldn't say it's the kind of book I'd normally pick up but I've heard so many amazing things about it I feel like I have to add it to my TBR list. 🙂 Also I'm glad two months in everything with your PhD seems to be going well, I'm sure you'll be able to stay healthy and stress-free going forwards.
Great post, and I hope you both have an amazing November. 🙂 ❤

  • Great wrap up guys! You both had a great month! Congratulations on your Interview, Trang! I haven’t read CIRCE yet but i’m planning to read it in December. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Poppy War! I hope i’ll get to it soon! I totally agree with you on Big Hero 6! That movie was amazing! I normally don’t cry during movies but that last scene totally moved me to tears.
Hope you both have a wonderful November! 🙂

THE POPPY WAR!! I hope you enjoy it, Lashaan. I’m super excited to read your review for Red Moon. I haven’t read a book by him yet, though I’ve had one sitting on myself for a year or two now.

    • Your raving review for it has definitely given me that extra push to read it ASAP hahah And yes, I too look forward to finding out what makes Kim Stanley Robinson such a big sci-fi author; this will be my first experience of his writing. 😀 Happy reading, Nadine!

  • Happy Belated Birthday Trang!! 🙂 Am glad that things are looking up for you and I hope they continue to get better.
And wow, Lashaan! You must be one busy dude working on your PhD and all. A good schedule certainly helps in keeping organized. I hate schedules, but I’ve reluctantly started to follow one since my job includes event planning.

  • You all had a WONDERFUL MONTH! I’m so glad your mother is doing better, Trang. Sending all the healing I can your way. ❤ ❤ ❤

I completely fell in love with A Star is Born and I cannot wait to see The Hate U Give. My book club is going next week. 🙂 That said… I have to give a shout out to Big Hero 6. I desperately need to watch this film again. So cute!

I cannot wait to hear your reviews for The Poppy War and Odd One Out. Don’t leave us hanging! 🙂

    • I for one do miss reading more of your stuff. Your lyrical-ness is a rare thing that I do not seek out elsewhere hahah 😀 Hope you find a groove soon, if not, I do hope you enjoy what you’re reading/watching! 😀 In fact, I do wonder what movies you have seen lately though! 😀

  • Thanks for liking to read my material. I did in fact start writing today and will be posting a bit more. As for movies, most of what’s been out for awhile and now available on DVD, both hits and misses. However, I did just watch a 2000 film called Reindeer Games with Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron. Excellent movie. I found out about it from a book I had recently read called Universal Harvester. The main character worked in a video rental shop and liked the movie, Reindeer Games.
