Goodbye 2018 – Hello 2019

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

Just like everyone out there, it is time for me to also share my top/worse of 2018 and give you guys a little look at what I’m excited for in 2019!

You can expect this post to be on the slightly longer end of the spectrum as well. Do note that not everything that is listed were necessarily released in 2018. This is all about what I’ve read/watched during that formidable year!

P.S. All pictures can be clicked to be redirected to my reviews or towards Goodreads/IMDb for more information!

Feel free to share your thoughts on absolutely anything and everything! 😀

readhab

It has been a truly fascinating year of reading as I’ve cranked up the number of comic books, graphic novels and manga that I consume. My desire to rediscover manga during summer got me to visit and revisit so many series and I think 2019 will likely see my numbers explode exponentially in that regard. I’ve also indulged so many more comic books and graphic novels and have never been happier about it. There’s just so many of them that I want to read that I’m not surprised that I let it take over my reading habits.

Sorry to those who thought I might calm down on my comic book/graphic novel reviews. I don’t think that’s going to happen. 😀

As usual, a goal of 75 books was targeted and achieved but this time I blew by it with my latest addictions! For the curious minds, at least 40 books are actual novels. You know, the kind with a bunch of words and no pictures? 😀

topbooks

greybast.jpg greysis.jpg night.jpg sinsofemp.jpg blackprism.jpg

It is impossible to pick one out of these. It was already a pain just cutting it down to five. But if we speak strictly about 2018 releases, it would come down to the greatest debut of the year (The Grey Bastards) and the greatest sequel of the year (Grey Sister)!

worsebooks

traitor.jpg righteous.jpg red moon.jpg balllightning.jpg amapofthedark.jpg

They might have all won in this category, but they aren’t bad books at all. They all got 3 stars from me. If I were to pick one, I’d go with Ball Lightning by Cixin Liu. The writing style just wasn’t my cup of tea.

topcomics

saga9.jpg wknight.jpg sherrbabylon.jpg metal.jpg redson.jpg

Now this is just as hard to pick as my top book of the year. Way too many great comics were read. However, I’ll give it to Saga (Vol. 9) by Brian K. Vaughan. As the writer decides to take a break on this phenomenal series, he also leaves fans with one of the most tragic cliffhanger of all time. I’m not crying. You’re crying. 😔

worsecomics

injust.jpg terrifics.jpg sideways.jpg wwearthone.jpg preludes.jpg

Besides the whole New Age of Heroes line-up, I’ll give this achievement to Wonder Woman: Earth One (Vol. 1) by Grant Morrison. What a mess.

topmanga

deathnote.jpg naruto.jpg 1punch.jpg attackontitan.jpg onepiece.jpg

This isn’t actually a top 5, it’s just the five out of six manga series that I started to read this year and have been enjoying. 😂 I’ll easily give top manga to Naruto since I’m re-reading it with my better half. 😍

topshows

dds3.jpg bcss3.jpg wws2.jpg Anna Diop, Ryan Potter, Brenton Thwaites, and Teagan Croft in Titans (2018) ozark2.jpg

It has been a great year for shows again, but I’ve heavily cut down on my consumption of these to make more time for movies. I’ll however give top show to season 4 of Better Call Saul. What. A. Show.

topmovies

spiderverse.jpg rearwind.jpg annihilation.jpg infinitywar.jpg incred2.jpg

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was visually revolutionary and had brilliant story-telling. It would in fact be wrong to not consider it the greatest surprise of the year.

worsemovies

pred2.jpg publicene.jpg readyplaya1.jpg mowgli.jpg strangers.jpg

This is the only category that I have no problem tagging The Strangers: Prey at Night as the worse of the bunch. It really is the worse movie I’ve seen in my whole life. HORRIBLE. GARBAGE.

mostantibook

gutterprayer.jpg holysis.jpg burningwhite.jpg priest of lies.jpg dragonrepu.jpg

Super excited for the new releases in 2019. Holy Sister however wins this category since it is the finale to a series I’ve thoroughly enjoyed from the start!

mustreadbooks

hobbit.jpg andthenthere.jpg slaughterhouse.jpg colourofmag.jpg dune.jpg

So many great books I need to get around to. I’m definitely going to force myself to at least read these five in 2019. Putting them up here on this post is the ultimate way for me to make sure I keep my “promise”. 😀

mustreadcomics

preacher.jpg hellblaz.jpg darkseidwar.jpg hawkeye.jpg backinblack.jpg

I own all of these and have yet to get around to them. I have to change that and these will be the priority for 2019.

mustwatchmovies

titanic.jpg spiritaway.jpg 2001.jpg theladyvan.jpg shining.jpg

Sort of still surprised that I haven’t seen all of these already. I’ll change that for 2019. I’ll feel like a changed man once I do. 😀

readingnblogginreso

I’ll need to read more of my own books, especially all the SFF and classics I own.

I’ll continue my foray in the world of manga.

I’ll keep on going strong in my comic book and graphic novel consumption.

I’ll try and read at least one French book to make my French-self proud of my French-self.

I’ll attempt to apply a much more mixed approach in the type of posts I put up (two bookish posts per month, one novel review per week, one movie review per month, as many comic book and graphic novel review every month, etc.)

I’ll need to reinforce my blog hopping methodology (I’m likely to discuss this in my future bookish post)

  • I have read everything on your ‘must read’ list except for the Agatha Christie novel, however, one of my favorite movies is the 1945 version of ‘And Then There Were None’.

Hey, I see an Alfred Hitchcock film up there! I like ‘Rear Window’ well enough, but my favorite Hitchcock movies are ‘Rope’, and ‘Strangers on a Train’.

You are going to have a great 2019, dude!
    Happy Trails!
    ~Icky. 🙂

    • Not surprised to hear that to be honest hahahah! But not having read And Then There Were None though? Now that’s a surprise! 😮 Plan on ever fixing that? 😛 I’ll definitely look into watching that movie after reading the book though. There’s no doubt there. 😛

Yep! I discovered Hitchcock’s movies for the first time towards the end of 2018 and started my foray with Rear Window. I have Strangers on a Train on my watch list though, but I’ll definitely look into adding Rope to the mix now too. An approval from Ichy is always good with me! 😀

Hope you’ll have just as good of a year too, my friend! 🙂

  • 1) The cover for The Burning White is pure awesome. I love it!

    2) Your must read of 5 is a fantastic line up. I am really looking forward to what you think of each of them. Haven’t read Vonnegut, probably never will, but that’s ok, you can read him for me 😀

    3) Are you going to be reviewing any of the manga you read? Those were some nice titles…
….aaaaand I just saw you had the reviews up on GR. Guess that answers that question.

    4) Spirited Away is a phracking fantastic movie. I bought it unseen and haven’t regretted it yet 🙂

    5) 169 books and 44K pages. Those are some extremely respectable numbers.

    Keep up the good work…

    • 1) Tell me about it. Love the designs on all of them. They make for a pretty collection!

      2) I also wanted to add Gardens of the Moon in there (thanks to your introduction to the series) but feared that I’d be too ambitious. Still keeping it at number 6 or 7 though. I do hope I’ll be able to achieve this little challenge of mine! And I’ll gladly discover Vonnegut for you. Did you say no to visiting his books because you heard something about him/his books that you knew would never fit with your personality/beliefs?

      3) It has been a question that has been nagging me for a while too… I can’t do single volume reviews like you do since I don’t have enough days in a month to cover all of the manga I read, but I’ve been contemplating a “series” review once I complete some of the “finished” series. However, that leaves all the “ongoing” series that don’t seem to want to end left hanging… Don’t know what to do there. 😀 For now, I’ve indeed been leaving some little thoughts on each volume on Goodreads.

      4) A seal of approval from you for Spirited Away? Clearly I’ve been missing out on something.

      5) Well… If you look at it that way, I guess it is indeed respectable numbers. 😀 I believe I’ll be destroying that in 2019 now that I’m fully invested in manga/comics/graphic novels. Unless life says no, of course.

Thanks for still sticking around, good sir. I have always and will probably always be curious about your thoughts on everything and will always respect your good ol’ point of view on things! 🙂

      • 1) I am thankful they’ve kept the same motif for the whole series instead of changing things partway through and ruining “the look”. They do look pretty good sitting on my shelf 🙂

        2) I can’t pin it down to anything exactly, but everything I’ve heard about his books has never interested me and my impression of him is that he’s a social hippy. I haven’t actually looked into an biographies of him, so I may be misjudging him. But most of the people I see raving about his books are the kind of people I don’t take recommendations from 🙂 So that is why I’m really interested in what you think of him. An opinion I can trust.

        3) Maybe review by story-arc? I know that one piece had area-arcs, ie, all the adventures took place in “Big Blue” or “Heaven Yellow” or something. I like the idea of a series review for the finished ones. That sounds great.

        4) Almost all of Miyazaki’s films get my stamp of approval. Don’t mix him up with studio ghibli though. I made that mistake and ended up watching a cartoon about raccoons, where the males ended up stretching their ball sac’s to make a raft or something. And I am not kidding, as much as I wish I were!

        5) Mangas make for some nice number indeed. I know when I was in a reading frenzy of them that I think my numbers for a year or two were in the high 300’s? And that leads back to an earlier point, you just can’t review that much 🙂

        Liked by 2 people

        • The review by story-arc idea is pretty cool. I’ll have to look into that. 😮 Might even look into how the anime splits things up too to help me figure out some of the story arcs.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA WHAT ON EARTH! I had no idea about the whole ball sac story hahahahahaha I’m more curious than ever now though 🤣🤣🤣

  • I’m hoping that I enjoy Grey Sister more than Red Sister. I’m also planning on reading it this month, so fingers crossed!
Yes to The Black Prism and Sins of Empire! Both made my top books as well. I’m so happy The Burning White has a release date. Just waiting for my copies of the next two books in the mail!
I’m going to see Spider-Man tonight!! AHH SUPER PUMPED.

    • I do hope you’ll enjoy Grey Sister more than you did Red Sister too. 😮

I still need to pick up the Lightbringer series, but I am still excited to see this series come to an end instead of being dragged to its demise! 😮 Hope you’ll love it and if you read it before me (which is probably likely) that you’ll enjoy it a lot!

Oh man, you sure do know how to start the year off on the right foot!!!! Phenomenal movie and I hope you loved it! 😀 Happy New Year, Nadine! 🙂

Hopefully, I’ll hope into those Black Prism books this year. I’m almost done with Weeks’s Night Angel books, which I’m loving.
Would be interested in knowing what you think of The Shining movie. I didn’t see what’s so special about it, but I think that’s because I read the book first and loved it.

  • I’m glad you’re enjoying the comics/graphic novels/manga so much! Sometimes I go through phases where I absolutely devour a certain genre/topic, but I usually fizzle out with it soon afterwards. I am fascinated that you have never seen Titanic! How have you managed to avoid it all these years? Happy New Years! I hope 2019 is fantastic for you!

    • Thank you Stephanie for indulging my passion for them in that case! 😀 I do love sharing my thoughts on them with everyone even if I know a lot of bloggers don’t plan on reading them too! Hahahahah I wonder the same too. I think it’s cause I’ve heard too much about those famous scenes from the movie that I never found myself pushed into watching the real deal. I’ll definitely fix that this year! Happy New Year to you too, Stephanie! Hope you pick up the best of books and have a year filled with happiness! 😉

    • Happy New Year to you too, Kat! Hope your hometown has been treating you well! 😉 There are people who have indirectly complained about seeing a lot of comic book/graphic novel/manga reviews! I’m sure there are also some who aren’t voicing their opinion on that regard too and it’s totally okay. After all, people who follow Bookidote end up following both me and my co-blogger. While they only want reviews on YA titles, they might not be a huge fan of what I prefer reviewing, for example. 😛

But hey, I do appreciate that you appreciate that side of my blogging routine! 😉 I totally look forward to checking out Spirited Away!!! I only hear great things about it.

Hope you get around to reading and watching some of the best books/shows/movies this year, Kat! 😉

  • Oh, another vote for Saul… I need to finally go beyond the first few episodes… it started good, but I had other priorities.

Was Mowgli really that bad? I seem to remember reading it is an interesting, if flawed version, darker and pessimistic…

You have great “must read” and “must watch” sections…. just skip Titanic 😉

You’ve been a source of many inspirations in 2018, I’m sure the trend will continue, happy 2019!!

    • I’m a die-hard fan of Breaking Bad. It’s my all-time favourite show and there was nothing that was going to stop me from watching Better Call Saul hahah While many were skeptical about it, the show quickly proved its worth! It only gets better with each season and the last episode of the last season we had was phenomenal!!!! You need to get on quickly! 😀

The thing is… I like the light-hearted, music-filled and visually-stunning Disney adaptation of the Jungle Book. The Netflix adaptation suffered from huge comparisons to Disney’s adaptation, and it is a much darker, less musical and slightly more choppy take on the book. I haven’t had the chance to read the book yet, but I think it might be closer to what the book was than any other movie adaptation ever did.

Hahahaha someone who is not a fan of Titanic! That is a first for me. 😀

Oh man, I appreciate the kind words, good sir. I am happy to have met you and look forward to reading your insanely insightful posts over @ Re-enchantment of the World throughout 2019! Happy New Year! 😀

Keep those posts coming! 😀 I’m one of those people who would probably read maybe 1-2 graphic novels a year, but i love seeing your reviews about the ones i’d prolly never do. You know, i feel like i’m involved 😀

I just bought a copy of Then There Were None. Read it maybe 15 years ago, but only the translated version. Same for Dune i read 20 years ago, so they are both pretty ripe for a re-read.

  • Ha Lashaan I do agree with you on Mowgli! My kids watched it just this week and I found it so bad! I did not like the animals att all how they’s been “built” or … nope. Now when you say your French-self is French your mother language or is it English. I know you live in Canada and depending on the region you either have French either English as mother tongue. Oh and I just wanted to mention that you are featured on one of my BestBooksof2018 posts when I was speaking of best bloggers! If like me you disabled the pingback you may have missed it. Anyway I just wanted to tell you that I think you are great! Even if I don’t read the same books LOL And happy new year too!

    • Ahhh it was a truly peculiar movie. The puppet-like animals was not easy to admire at first either. And with the Disney Jungle Book movie released in 2016, it’s even harder to appreciate this darker musical-less version too!

Ahhh my mother tongue is English, but where I live, French is the “main” language (it’s still a modern-day political conflict hahah) I was referring to my French self because I’m born in Québec, Canada and my whole education is in French (and still in French). 😛 But since most of the things I do outside of school and work is in English, I felt like I wasn’t making that side of me too proud hahahaha

Oh my, you are way tooo kiiiiind! I actually do have pingback enabled, but I always feared that there are pingbacks that don’t pop up in my notifications (like this one). Some people say that for pingbacks to work, it needs to be directed towards a post/about me page. But thank you so much for the feature, it has been a pleasure to have gotten to interact with you and I sure as hell hope to continue this throughout 2019! 😉 You’re even more amazing, Sophie! 😀 Happy New Year to you too!

I love a long blog post, so I’ll be sticking around.

Ugh seeing Daredevil in your best shows hurt my heart! I am still not over it being cancelled. Stupid Disney and their stupid streaming service. Season 3 was the best one yet – I can’t believe that they’ve cancelled after such an amazing series of episodes. And then I’ll be heart broken all over again when they cancel The Punisher and JJ 😦

Awn, I’m glad that you aren’t discouraged by the length of my stuff/the wordiness of some of my posts hahahah I know I’ll continue to visit your own extremely introspective reviews too! 😛

Aw man…. I was also super sad to see Daredevil being cancelled. I honestly thought Iron Fist and Luke Cage were cancelled in order to launch a new show where they’d be together… But when DD was cancelled, all my hopes died for that. Nothing made sense anymore. I’m just glad Punisher is still going now. A teaser trailer was released just recently for S2 as well! I’m glad it’s not in the same “package” deal with Marvel/Netflix. Same for JJ!!

You need to share your secrets because my reading took a swan dive in the last two months of the year. 🙂
I keep hearing so many amazing things about Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse and I need to see it ASAP, but Infinity War is on my top movies of 2018 list as well. I'm pretty much counting down the days until the release of Endgame now.

And since I started the whole manga thing in summer, I feel like 2019 will see that number explode with an year-round consumption of that medium hahah Ahhh slumps aren’t fun and hopefully you won’t meet one this year!

It is an absolutely gorgeous and amazing movie. I do hope you get the chance to see it. It’s worth every penny and it’s really something worth watching in theaters.

Can’t wait to see what’s the plan with Endgame and everything after it. It’s going to be a fascinating year in the superhero game! 😀

He is why I love the boy’s side of the genre and don’t just stick to my shoujo. I started Black Clover this year and Asta sort of reminds me of an even better Naruto! Anyway it sounds fun reading it with your significant other…

I really loved Spirited Away…. I think it is my favorite of his movies! Anyway it sounds like you had an incredible year and its great to see such a great blogger as you still around with all you and Trang have on your plates. Happy New Year to you and yours 😀

    • Back in high school I used to watch it too!!! But then I stopped everything related to manga and anime around the time Pain appears in the story. 😦 I sort of despised the amount of fillers we were getting in Naruto back in the day too hahah I sooooo need to check out Black Clover at some point too. I hear amazing things about it. Especially from those who watch the anime. My s/o also stopped around the same moment as me in Naruto and the coincidence brought us to re-read it all and actually finish the whole series. So far it has been a blast and will likely be pretty fun to discover those stories we never got to read/watch! 😛

Can’t wait to watch Spirited Away. I haven’t yet checked out any of those Studio Ghibli movies too. 2019 will definitely be the year where I find out why they are so, so popular! 😛

Thank you so much, Dani, and I wish you a Happy New Year as well! I hope you’ll get around to reading and watching the best of books/manga/shows/anime too this year! I look forward to our interactions throughout the year!!! 😀

  • Ah, Lashaan – Long time no talking! Happy (Belated) New Year 😊

    Wow – 169 books, that’s amazing! Congratulations.
I’m really looking forward to watching Spiderman into The Spider Verse so I am happy to see that it was one of your favourite movies of 2018. I watched Ready Player One last year and I enjoyed it, I haven’t read the book yet so I have no idea how the two compares. I’ve heard amazing things about Ozark and it is on my to be watched list for 2019. Titanic is a beautiful and heart wrenching movie and I hope you enjoy it.

I hope you have a lovely 2019 and that you read many more great books and watch great movies and TV shows xx

    • Michelle! Happy New Year to you too! 😀

Thanks hahah! I feel like I might make it seem even more impressive this year with a year-round consumption of manga too. It’s definitely going to be great year for reading.

You soooo need to check out Into the Spider-Verse. It is beautiful in so many ways. You’re sure to have a good time with it! 😀 It even won a Golden Globe today for Best Animated Movie! 😀

Ahh, I read the book before watching the movie. It’s not a bad movie and is actually quite fun, but I feel like it missed the “purpose” of the book, although translating that “purpose” onto the big screen would’ve been a bit impossible too!

Ahhh, Ozark was such a nice surprise when season 1 came out. I don’t hear a lot of people rave about it nowadays, but I find it quite awesome, brutal and tragic!

I did feel a bit odd saying that I haven’t seen Titanic yet, even if I know what happens and all thanks to general knowledge of everyone out there about that movie! Can’t wait to find out for myself now though. 😮

Wishing you a beautiful 2019 as well and I look forward to every interaction we’ll ever have throughout the year! Hope you’ll pick up some amazing books and watch amazing shows/movies this year too!! 😀

  • hehehe glad you’ve been enjoying comics/manga this year 😀 I’m so glad you loved grey sister too. And I definitely want to read grey bastards and black prism. And I’ve not finished saga yet, but it’s brilliant! Totally get why avengers infinity war was one of your favourites. I’m reallly anticipating holy sister 🙂 And can’t recommend the hobbit, and then there were none and pratchett enough!! 😀 I *still* need to watch spirited away as well. Wonderful wrap up!

I believe you’ll enjoy them all in fact hahah I can’t wait to read those myself, especially the Hobbit and all the Pratchett stuff considering the beautiful reviews you’ve written up for them in the past. 😛 I saw Spirited Away earlier in the year and it was beaaaaautiful! So glad I got around to it. 😛

  • You consumed your manga like mango. Quite a record of reading you beat there. Congratulations. I noticed your lists have quite a few vintage or classic materials (e.g., The Shining). A 3-month-old Happy New Year to you!

    • Hahahahahah I miss your poems/haikus! Will drop by your blog soon enough to see what’s up! 😀 You probably went around the around at least 3 times since we last talked, didn’t you? 😀

And yes! I need to go back to reading some of those classic material, especially when most of them are just waiting on me!
