The Midnight Star ( The Young Elites #3) by Marie Lu

MY RATING: ★

“There was once a time when darkness shrouded the world, and the darkness had a queen.”

– Marie Lu

capture-decran-2017-02-26-a-14-32-12With the last book of the trilogy read, I can confirm that this one is my favourite trilogies ever. It beats out Divergent and Hunger Games easily. Maybe because I always loved Fantasy more than Dystopian trilogies. The Grisha Trilogy was amazing but I found flaws in the 1st book. The Young Elites hasn’t.

If you haven’t read my reviews for the other two books of this trilogy you can find them here : The Young Elites (#1) / The Rose Society (#2)

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

MY RATING :

“If you strip away all the trappings of personality and lifestyle, what are the core components that make me me?”
Blake Crouch, Dark Matter

img_1756Alright folks, brace yourselves for Trang is about to geek out about this book. Jason Denssen, a professor of astrophysics living a comfortable life with his wife and his kid until one day… he’s abducted, drugged and woke up in the same city but nothing is the same. He doesn’t have a wife, nor a kid, but is a renowned researcher who just accomplished the most amazing breakthrough of the year:  he had succeeded in creating quantum superposition of an object that was visible to the human eye.

The Wicked + The Divine by Kieron Gillen (Vol.1)

MY RATING: ★

2364791

‘ I don’t understand a word she’s saying. Nobody does. All we know is that it means everything. She’s been doing this for an hour, and it’s been all climax. Every second is the best of my life so far. ”

The artwork alone can steal all the stars from my rating. But not only  the drawings are great, the storyline is astonishing.

Imagine a world where your idols are Gods. Littereally Gods. They are selected in a particular way and they have 2 years of stardom, after that they have to die. The first volume introduces us to a young fan who got caught up with one of the wildest God of the gang : Luci… Lucifer 😉  Continue reading

A Bookidote Discussion – What do you think about speed-reading?

Hello lovely bookworms! 😛

Let’s not kid ourselves here. We all wished to be able to read a lot faster. With a TBR that grows at an exponential rate while our currently reading book is taking a decade to go through, it’s no surprise that we’ve contemplated the idea of having super speed-reading powers.

eyes-1

I’ve always personally seen myself as an incredibly slow reader. I’ve never been able to finish a 200 page novel in a single sitting or even in a day, but life has put in front of me people who are able to go through a 1000 pages in a blink of an eye. Young, I strongly avoided comparing my reading speed to anyone and everyone. Instead of having a high reading speed, I’d use more of my time per day to go through more chapters than another, faster, reader would. You see my compensating strategy there? Continue reading

Song of the Sea by Jade Varden

Song of the Sea  : ★★★★☆ (3.8)

“It’s a liquid land filled with secrets and mysteries, and I wanted to discover them all.”

– Jade Varden, Song of the Sea

Brenna, a fifteen years old girl finds a fairly odd artifact in her attic and decided to use it for her school project. Unusual? Yes, but not useless. She will discover through that action how her world will be changed forever and that her family’s history laid beyond the surface of the Earth. Across the Atlantic Ocean, we will discover another universe with mermaids, selkies and mermen. Honestly, I didn’t know the existence of selkies before reading this. I had to google some pictures and damn, what a fascinating creature it is !

Destruction by Eric Mrozek

Destruction :★★★★☆

“Our actions, for good or ill, will cascade through history whether we want them or not.”
– Narrator

It’s like a remix of Game of Throne and Lord of the Rings and I love every single bit of it ! The story is about Helisah, a young elf girl starting her new school year in the kingdom of Callista like any college student. Until one day, her boyfriend Khal betrayed the land and helped out Thrakoth (a Talurian lord) to flip the city upside down and kill everyone. Lost and having nowhere to go, she decides to join a troupe of assassins to begin her journey to the road of revenge.

“What Aegras failed to understand was that it is not the spells that kept him alive. Rather, it was his own mind. Training can push a person so far, but that person must have a certain brilliance to turn their survival into a certainty.”
– Narrator

I think this is the perfect book for any fan of fantasy: it has magic, sword combat, funny lines, and amazing character development. Eric Mrozek has triumphed in shaping a whole new world just with a few typical fantasy elements. Furthermore, the diary style was the ideal set for this story. Not only does it offer us a more intimate angle on what’s going on, mentioning only a few people that are really important for the story, but it also allows us to feel the maturation of Helisah, how her mind and perception of the world evolves.

Back To School Special

Hello lovelies <3,

Here we are again ! If you’re anywhere like us, you’ve probably started another long year of learning and discovering in that beautiful institution of your town. That’s right ! School ! Our good ol’ buddy. Never seems to want to leave us alone, always there to tell you that it’s that time of the year again. The time where you have to wake up, dress up and get to class. There’s nothing more dreadful as that.

Do not fret, fellow Bookidote friends ! Today, we would like to present you guys with a back-to-school special. One that might end up helping some of you guys get through the next couple of months before the highly anticipated winter holidays. As treacherous as school (high school, college or university) can be, there are a lot of things you can do to boost up those grades and be ready for the next big
challenge your teachers might throw at you.Screen Shot 2015-09-12 at 4
You should also always remember that it’s not always about performing insanely well in school. A really big secret that some people tend to forget is that balance is a huge component to success. You need to learn to find the equilibrium between social life, health, school, work and pleasure. Society doesn’t need zombies roaming their streets. It needs a bunch of Sherlocks. Oh wait, that might not be a good idea. But
you get the jist of it, right? 😉

Daredevil: Devil at Bay vol.1 by Mark Waid

Vol .1 Devil at Bay : ★★★ 1/2 ☆

Once again, I don’t own the trade paperback since I prefer collecting the comics issues. But for those of you who prefer reading it at once, I recommend you to go for the volume 1, which collects #0.5, #1, #1.5, #2, #3, #4 and #5.

First, this series of Daredevil started in 2014, a title from the new campaign Marvel NOW! For those of you who don’t know, Marvel NOW is a project to reboot all ”the biggest names and greatest characters in comics”, you can find more information about it here. In short, Marvel NOW is to Marvel’s what the New 52 is to DC comics.

Our 5-Star Rating Guide

2015-08-24 12

Hello Space Monkeys,

We’ve come to realize the need of explanations regarding our rating system. This might come as a huge surprise, but the way we rate books is absolutely different from each other and also you folks. Every literature piece never escapes the eyes of critics. Even if writers might devote their lives to writing for the simple joy of leaving something behind and sharing their stories with the world, criticism will always be present. To help people like you and me to decide on our next read, to provide constructive feedback to help authors make better stories or to simply share their thoughts on their reading experience, reviews and ratings have their uses.

A lot people like to use a 5 star rating, especially big name websites like Amazon, Goodreads and so on. We wanted to abide by that system so that we can easily rate books on these platforms and to simplify your understanding of our love/hate for a book. Of course, there’s still the problem where each star might have a different value and that’s where this post comes in handy — of course it has a purpose, why else would we put it up for you guys. 😀
